Potassium formate. HCOOK. CAS 590-29-4. The potassium salt of formic acid, available as a white crystalline powder or — more commonly these days — as a colorless liquid solution. Molecular weight: 84.12. It dissolves ridiculously well in water, and over the past decade it's become the deicing agent of choice for aviation infrastructure and the premium brine additive for oil and gas operations. The reasons aren't subtle: it works at temperatures where everything else fails, it barely corrodes anything, and it biodegrades without a trace.
Specs: solid form at 97% minimum purity, white powder, freely water-soluble. Liquid form at 50% or 75% concentration, clear and colorless. Density for the solid: 1.91 g/cm³. The 75% solution won't freeze until you're past -50°C — that's the actual measured freezing point. pH runs 9.0–11.0. Chloride-free — non-corrosive to concrete, steel, and aluminum. BOD comes in lower than acetate-based alternatives. Potassium ions? Plants treat them as nutrients.
Deicing is the headline application. It melts ice up to five times faster than chloride salts. Still working at temperatures where sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and even potassium acetate have thrown in the towel. In the oilfield, potassium formate brines deliver high-density, low-viscosity drilling and completion fluids — shale stabilization, clay hydration inhibition, formation protection — all while meeting tightening environmental discharge rules.
Other applications: leather tanning as a masking acid, textile dyeing as a reducing agent, cement early-strength admixture, and agricultural foliar fertilizer. The fertilizer angle is worth noting — you're delivering potassium nutrition alongside deicing performance.
Why pick potassium formate over potassium acetate for airport deicing? Lower BOD, less corrosive, no vinegar smell, better low-temperature performance. It's the better molecule for environmentally sensitive airport environments, and the cost difference has narrowed enough that the switch usually pays for itself in reduced maintenance.
