Sodium formate. HCOONa. CAS 141-53-7. The sodium salt of formic acid, showing up as white powder or granules, molecular weight 68.01. It's one of those chemicals that doesn't get a lot of headlines but keeps showing up in production chains you wouldn't expect — chemical synthesis, oilfield drilling, leather tanning, deicing. The weak alkalinity in water and the fact that it breaks down clean make it an easy choice for heavy industry. Purity grades run 92% through 98%, all industrial. A 10% solution gives you pH 7.5–9.5. It dissolves easily, and the resulting solution is mildly alkaline. Where does it go? It's an intermediate — feeds into formic acid production, oxalic acid manufacturing, and sodium hydrosulfite synthesis (the bleaching agent). In oil and gas, it's the backbone of solid-free drilling mud systems that achieve high density and low viscosity at the same time — faster drilling, better formation protection, longer bit life. Tanneries use it as a masking acid in chrome tanning to get even chromium penetration through the hide — uneven take-up ruins a batch. Textile dyeing runs it as a reducing agent. Construction uses it as a winter antifreeze admixture that accelerates setting without eating into final concrete strength. And yes, it shows up in road deicing too — that market is growing as chloride regulations tighten.

What purity for what job? 92% handles deicing and concrete work fine. For leather tanning, chemical synthesis, and drilling fluids — where impurities can cascade into downstream quality problems — go 95–98%. The price difference is small compared to what a bad batch costs you in rework.

Standalone deicer? It can work solo, but most formulations blend it with potassium formate for better low-temp performance and less corrosion risk. The blended approach tends to win on both performance and total cost.
